Print a 3MF file
Check a 3MF file with its scale, objects and print plates
A 3MF package can carry geometry, a defined unit, multiple object instances and additional metadata together. Our configurator evaluates the model data supported for quoting and production; you then explicitly choose the order material, filament colour and quality.

A defined unit instead of an assumed STL scale
A 3MF model can state its physical unit. The units defined by the core specification, from microns to metres, are interpreted; millimetres apply when no unit is present. This is less ambiguous than STL, which normally stores unitless coordinates.
Still compare all three displayed outer dimensions with your CAD model or a known reference. A valid unit field cannot correct geometry that was exported at the wrong scale.
Build items, instances and multiple print plates
3MF separates reusable object resources from the build items intended for output. The upload resolves supported object and component references and their transforms. Repeated build items remain separate instances, and supported multi-plate projects are displayed and calculated plate by plate.
- Check every intended object in the preview
- Compare plate count, names and dimensions
- Remove unintended duplicates and helper objects before export
- Set order quantity only after the file check
Colour and material metadata do not place the order
Supported base display colours may help organise the preview, but they are only visual hints. The filament colour and material ordered are determined by your selections in the configurator.
Embedded slicer profiles, support instructions, printer settings, material names and unsupported 3MF extensions are not adopted automatically. State mandatory assignments and functional requirements in the order notes or clarify them first.
3MF compared with STL
STL mainly describes a triangulated surface and leaves scale, material and object organisation to later steps. A 3MF package can keep units, named objects, instances, transforms and display information together.
That structure can make assemblies and multi-part jobs easier to inspect, but it does not guarantee a closed mesh or a manufacturable design. Walls, overhangs, fits, load direction and intended use still need review.
From upload to a traceable calculation
After upload, the configurator reads supported geometry, units, build items and print plates. Check the preview, dimensions, volume and plate list, then select material, colour, quality, infill and quantity.
The displayed price uses the measured geometry and your configuration, including the required print plates. Order-relevant data is checked again on the server; ambiguous or unsupported file content must be clarified before production.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions about 3MF files
Do I need to choose millimetres or centimetres for 3MF?
Usually not. The unit stored in the 3MF model is evaluated; millimetres apply if it is omitted. Always compare the displayed dimensions with a known target dimension.
Can one 3MF file contain several parts?
Yes. Supported build items, components and transforms are resolved. Use the preview and plate list to confirm that every intended instance is present and unintended duplicates are absent.
Are 3MF colours and materials ordered automatically?
No. Supported base colours may appear in the preview, but they are not binding. Select the order material and filament colour in the configurator and explicitly agree any special assignments.
Are slicer settings and supports from 3MF adopted?
Not automatically. Printer profiles, support data and extension metadata apply only after explicit technical confirmation. The visible order configuration and agreed notes are authoritative.
Is 3MF always better than STL?
3MF carries more structure and a defined scale. STL can still be sufficient for one simple mesh. Correct geometry, dimensions and complete manufacturing requirements matter most.
